DeFiHubSpace recently received a detailed independent security and beta testing report on our live Sepolia token-gated content experiment.

The researcher acted as both a normal beta tester (following our published guide) and a security auditor. We are publishing the key findings transparently because we believe in building in public and learning from real feedback.

Positive Results

All 5 steps in the official Sepolia Beta Testing Guide completed successfully.
Swap flow, wallet connection, and basic gating worked as expected on-chain.
Smart contract behaved correctly (per-wallet cap enforced, treasury intact, no unauthorized mint/burn).

Critical Finding

The report identified a **critical vulnerability**: the entire token gate is implemented client-side in React. Gated content is delivered to the browser unconditionally and then hidden behind a conditional render. This allowed full bypass of the gate with zero DUTIL.

The researcher also highlighted the related architectural issue: no server-side verification of token ownership.

Our Original Rationale for Client-Side Gating

We made this architectural choice deliberately during early development:

It allowed us to stay extremely lightweight (Next.js + Gray Matter only, no backend).
It provided instant checks after wallet connection with zero extra latency.
It kept user privacy higher (wallet address never leaves the browser).
It matched our “minimal dependencies, maximum control” philosophy.

We explicitly accepted the security trade-off because this was an early experiment focused on testing incentive alignment and user behavior — not protecting highly sensitive data.

Trade-offs We Already Knew

We discussed these exact trade-offs when designing the system:

The report validates that we correctly understood the risks. The critical bypass was possible precisely because of the client-side design we chose.

Our Response & Next Steps

We are treating this report as high-priority input.

Immediate actions planned:

Move gated content delivery to a server-side authenticated flow (the only complete fix).
Implement EIP-4361 (Sign-In With Ethereum) for proper wallet ownership proof.
Add missing HTTP security headers and improve UX issues.

We will publish a detailed remediation update once the server-side changes are live.
