Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has thrown his full personal weight behind the Ethereum Foundation’s newly launched dedicated DeFi unit.
On February 24, one day after the EF published its Commitment to DeFi post and announced the new team led by Charles St. Louis and ivangbi, Vitalik quote-tweeted the official thread and restated the vision in his own words.
“DeFi is a central part of the value that Ethereum provides… We have a specific vision: permissionless, open-source, private, security-first global finance that maximizes people’s control over their own assets, minimizes centralized chokepoints and trusted third parties… We want protocols that pass the walkaway test — that keep working even if the original team suddenly disappears without warning (or even becomes hostile / compromised).”

Vitalik expanded on the practical priorities the new EF DeFi team will tackle, including:
- Oracle security and decentralization (“A LOT of skeletons in the closet”)
- Privacy-preserving payments and more complex use cases (e.g. CDPs that reduce liquidation sniping)
- AI-assisted formal verification and user-side safeguards
- Improving open-source licensing and forkability
He closed by inviting aligned builders to collaborate. The EF says it wants to actively strengthen the permissionless, intermediary-minimizing side of DeFi so it becomes the default choice for both individuals and institutions.
Why this matters
This is the strongest signal yet that the DeFipunk mandate is not just a mid-level team initiative. It has direct, high-level backing from Ethereum’s most influential voice. The timing, 24 hours after the official announcement, removes ambiguity about the Foundation’s direction.
The full EF announcement and new DeFi unit details are covered in our updated insights piece:

Community reaction on X has been overwhelmingly positive, with builders and analysts calling it the clearest high-level signal yet that DeFipunk is now core Ethereum strategy.
