LayerZero attributes the exploit to a sophisticated actor that compromised downstream RPC nodes used by the LayerZero Labs DVN. The attacker reportedly used binary swapping and selective message forgery that triggered only for KelpDAO's specific configuration. Public accounts also describe a self-destructing payload and DDoS-based failover used to mask attack activity.

The exploit path succeeded because KelpDAO was running a 1/1 DVN configuration on most rsETH omnichain pathways.

Why 1/1 DVN Was the Fatal Flaw

A 1/1 DVN setup creates a single point of failure. Once that verification path is compromised for a chain, forged messages can be accepted as valid by the token adapter.
